Why should I be concerned about loosing weight? Is it really only about how I look?
Weight management for some is mandatory as a part of their Health and Wellness plan for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer prevention. For others the feeling is that it would be nice to loose 5 or 10 pounds. With the average size of North Americans increasing and continuing to do so and an estimated amount of over 40 billion dollars a year being spent on weight loss why are we not having more impact nationally
Do you have a goal of loosing weight?
People come in all different sizes and shapes. Some can easily maintain their weight or loose weight, while others struggle to loose a few pounds. This program is designed based on body types and individualized metabolism. How your body responds to the stimuli of food, and where excess weight is stored helps determine your metabolism. By an understanding of how your food is uniquely digested, absorbed and assimilated by your body a specialized diet will help you successfully manage your weight.
How much weight is this program designed to help you loose?
This program is tailor made for people wishing to loose up to 15-20 pounds. If more weight loss is desired than a customized program will be designed for you. Research shows that weight loss that is more rapid than 1-2 pounds commonly results in the weight to return. Our goal is to create empowered individuals who no longer carry extra weight.
How is the program different than all the other programs out there?
A Naturopathic approach to weight loss is to encourage weight loss while on the program but also to maintain that loss once your weight goal has been reached. How our program varies from many other approaches and fad diets is that we incorporate your Constitutional Food Intolerances( how your body responds to various foods) ,Detoxification, Metabolic urine testing ( how your body is metabolizing nutrients, your core energy and urinary ph which relates to general health), The Functional State of Organs ( the physiology of where the stress is in the body) , Where your Score is on the Health Wellness Spectrum and Body Type.
Our program is also unique in that we work in alliance and may refer to our other team members that will enhance your overall Healthly Lifestyle such as Acupuncture, The Bowen Therapy, Chiropractic, Massage, Clinical Nutrition, Psychotherapy, Personal Training and Yoga.
What are Constitutional Food Intolerances, Detoxification and Why should I be evaluated?
Because our environment can expose our bodies to many toxins our bodies continually have to work at cleansing and at times our organs of eliminations ie our bowels, kidneys, skin , and lungs may reduce their function due to obstructions. Signs of toxicity may include generalized fatigue, irritability, headaches, PMS and premature menopause, infertility, digestive symptoms and weight gain. Detoxification is often the first step needed.
A Food Intolerance can hinder our body’s ability to clear also. If we are sensitive to a food , our body may not fully digest it and instead of our body breaking it down into single molecules in which our body can use to produce energy (or ATP) , the food is left as multiple larger molecules ie disaccharides. These irritate the digestive lining causing an inflammation and wearing away of the mucosal membrane in which our digestive enzymes sit hindering digestion further .
This amplification of improper digestion increases the “ foreign “ products in our body which have to be sent to the liver for cleansing. If the liver is overloaded our body deposits these by products in organs slowing down their function and adipose tissue. We are very inclined to gain weight when in this state. By therefore recognizing our food intolerances, eliminating them and doing a proper individualized detoxification ( ie liver or digestive specific) we are creating the ideal milieu or environment to reduce weight.
What is Metabolic Urine Testing?
For Optimal Results, a comprehensive Metabolic Urine Testing will be performed to determine your status of :
- Urinary PH –Are you acidic ( which promotes pain and other chronic degenerative conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, cancer) or alkaline. The body will reduce weight more readily in an alkaline environment
- Indican Bowl function - to determine how you are digesting and absorbing and eliminating
- Konesburg Adrenal Gland – How much reserve power do you have? And to assess overall adrenal gland strength which is a reflection of cortisol. Cortisol when unbalanced or too high can increase weight deposition around the middle.
What is the Functional State of my Organs?
The functional state of your organs is an evaluation of where stress exists in the body relative to organs often at a subclinical level. For example, If one is low energy , the adrenals will pump out alot of hormones including adrenaline to try and stay awake and cortisol. The cortisol over a longer period of time will encourage weight gain around the mid- line which is often very difficult to get off. In this instance a Naturopathic approach would be to strengthen the adrenal gland , so the cortisol is reduced. When one is fatigued the body will also look for quick energy sources and will cause one to crave carbohydrates and sugars setting one to be in a reactionary hypoglycaemic state. It would be like to body craves sugars to keep you going and awake, which again increases overall weight.
What is the Health Wellness Spectrum ( HWS) ©? And How does it impact my weight?
The HWS© is a combination of a questionnaire, physical exam and metabolic urinalysis that measures the state of where your health resides on the Health Wellness Continum. We know that health changes do not occur over night ,but they are a slow and steady path of change. The score received gives us an understanding of what organs need support and which are the connections that exist in a person’s health. For example if it was determined that your indican bowl function was positive , konesburg positive, ph acidic and you experience hypoglycaemia you are about 40% of your health potential. This increases cortisol and the body thus gains weight around the middle. In this situation you would need to do a bowl specific cleanse, increased the strength of the adrenal gland and regulate sugar management inorder to have a integrated effective program for weight loss for you.
What is a person’s Body Type and how does it effect my weight?
There are many systems of evaluating body types and how they impact weight. The system used in this program are based on Dr. Abravanel’s Body Type Diet and Lifetime Nutrition Plan work and body type relating to dominant organ system in each individual. Body Type can be evaluated by determining where a person will tend to hold weight, what foods they tend to crave , and the timing of when foods are eaten. The Body Type program reduces foods that stimulate a person’s dominant gland and increase foods of the less active glands creating an optimum state of balance and hence weight. For example a Thyroid body type would tend to gain weight in the thighs and upper hips for a woman and crave sweets and starches which further stimulates the dominant organ the thyroid. Thus the program for the Thyroid body type would reduce these foods and increase foods to support the other organs, It would also take into consideration the ideal time to do so.
This would be in opposition to an Adrenal body type which would crave animal products and salt. These individuals would tend to increase weight in the front of the body and have a straight sturdy line to the body.
What are other factors that can cause weight gain?
Other factors that can cause weight gain include: essential fatty acid deficiency, blood sugar imbalance, hormonal imbalance and mental emotional stress. Often the weight is a person’s protection mechanism to avoid facing a particular issue that is present but painful to address. A holistic approach and work with a Naturopath would help identify any of the above issues and assist an individual in outlining a complete individual plan to achieve permanent weight reduction.
Do you have any tips I can consider now?
A few simple Nutritional tips that will enhance health and weight loss in general include: ( It is always to check with your Health Professional Team before beginning any program)
- 1. Protein- Having sufficient high quality Protein in our diets. A complete protein contains all 9 essential amino acids. To calculate protein needs take your body weight in pounds and divide by 2.2 to establish your weight in kilograms. Take your body weight in kilograms and multiply by 0.8. For example a 140 lb woman ie 63.3kg multiplied by 0.8= 50.9 gm of protein per day. For a training athlete multiply your body weight in kilograms by 1.5. For example this same person if a training athlete would need 63.3X1.5=95.44g of protein per day. Each ounce of meat is roughly 7 g of protein and dairy protein is about 8g. Here are some simple protein examples : 1 4oz. Chicken breast =28g of protein: 1 oz serving of tofu = 4.2 g of protein.
- 2. EFA’s - Include Essential Fatty Acids in your diet. These are good fats and remain liquid at room temperature. They provide our bodies with w-3 and w-6 fatty acids and are found in fish oils and cold pressed flax, hemp and olive oil. A balance between w-3 and w-6 is important, hemp is an excellent source of the above as well as GLA which is often used for females for hormonal support.
- 3. Fiber-Another tip is to include lots of Fiber in our diets. Thirty five grams per day of fiber is ideal yet most of us get only 1—12 gm per day. Soluble fiber is easy to increase by increasing fruits, some vegetables such as zucchini, spinach , broccoli and brussel sprouts . Insoluble fiber is generally found in cereals, wheat bran , stalks and peels of fruits and vegetables. Insoluble fiber delays glucose absorption and evens blood sugar, thereby reducing sweet cravings. Insoluble fiber acts like a toothbrush and cleans the intestinal system and has been linked to the removal of carcinogens from the system. It is important to understand that although we have been reducing the total fat content in our food choices , we are often increasing the carbohydrate content. The total carbohydrate content is the sugar and starch and then subtract the dietary fiber. This is the amount that eventually can be converted to fat in the body.
For example A cereal with total protein of 6g, total carb 30g, sugar 11.9g, starch 10.4 g and dietary fiber 7.5 g. Total carb 30-fiber 7.5 = 22.5 g can be converted to sugar and or fat in the body. - 4. Keep your body fueled- Eat or drink every 3 hours to keep your body sugar evenly regulated and reduce sugar cravings.
- 5. Most of all Enjoy life as a positive mental attitude will encourage the release of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin reduces carbohydrate cravings and the propensity to overeat. The antiobesity protein called leptin produced by the body helps to regulate body fat and is believed to be present in higher amounts in those who have optimal health including weight balance.
Will I be taking any supplements?
The program will encourage gentle detoxification along with enhancing the organs that need the support for you. When one reduces fat composition in their body , the cells release stored sometimes toxic by products that have been stored over time in adipose cells ( many petrochemicals are lipid soluble , so are stored in adipose cells)
What can I expect from my visits?
The program is broken up into Two Phases:

Phase I- Weeks 1-6
- Week 1-New Patient Visit, Physical Exam, Body Composition Evaluation- approximately 60 minutes.
Week 2-Testing and Labs- Food Intolerance Test,Functional Screening, Metabolic Urine Tests, Food Intolerance Consult, Begin Detox- approximately 40 minutes.
Week 3- Body Type Food Choices and Introduction to Infrared Sauna Program – approximately 25 minutes
Week 4-Follow up , Acupuncture and Supplements To Assist Weight Program- approximately 25 minutes - Week 5- Follow up and Exercise Program- approximately 25 minutes
- Week 6- Follow up and Stress Managment- approximately 25 minutes
Phase II- Weeks 7-12
- Week 7- Follow up and Last 5 lbs of Body Type Food Choices- approximately 25 minutes
- Week 8- Follow up and Bowen Therapy- approximately 25 minutes
- Week 9- Follow up and Acupuncture- approximately 25 minutes
Week 10- Follow up and Acupuncture- approximately 25 minutes - Week 11- Follow up and Retest – Functional Screen and Organs- approximately 25 minutes

Phase III.
If needed cycle repeats for every additional 15-20 lbs need to reduce weight. Each session approximately 15 minutes long.
What if I prefer to do follow ups every two weeks instead of weekly?
Note it is recommended to do your follow ups weekly, however if you wish to do the follow ups every two weeks , the program can be customized. The same criteria outlined above would be followed sequentially.
What if I miss a week?
If you miss a week due to travel, illness etc , a follow up visit would be scheduled to your convenience.
What if I am already a Optihealth Patient and have done a New Patient Visit as well as the Food Intolerance Test, Functional Screening and Metabolic Labs?
If you are already a Optihealth member and done a New Patient Visit and Labs then your first visit would be 60 minutes and begin at Visit 3. The fee for the program would be adjusted accordingly.

A Naturopathic Approach will evaluate all aspects of a person’s health including lifestyle, environmental factors, mental and emotional stresses, physical status and genetics. After a full history, physical exam and body composition evaluation various tests will be run to assess food intolerances and organ strength. Once a person’s unique profile is determined a plan can be implemented.
